I purchased this ebook before a trip to Malta with the hope that it would give me a quick understanding of the country, its history and people. I was surprised to find that it provided that and so much more! In The Story of Malta Ballou shares a wealth of information and experience that is astounding. He is able to jump from a discussion of the geology of the islands to an anecdote about trees in Mexico to an incident in China without losing a beat. It's sometimes disjointed, sometimes a bit dry, but always informative and facinating. I found Ballou's desire to discuss any and every topic at length invigourating! By "at length" I mean, for example that when discussing the architecture of a particular structure of Malta he would provide a whirlwind tour of the history of the Mediteranean Sea over the last millennium to provide some context. The book was written over a century ago so it does not provide any information about recent events impacting Malta - so nothing about Fortress Malta during World War Two or it's recent political history, not a major issue if you just want to get a feel for the place and understand what shaped it in the past. This book is not for everyone but I found it fascinating and would have loved to sit down for a lunchtime discussion with its author. He sounds well-read, very well-travelled (he has written other similar books on a variety of other places) and is not too shy to provide his opinion about absolutely anything. It's interesting, informative, and although I wouldn't call it a fun read it is enjoyable.
Read this book coz its about my native country. So interesting to look from the author s eye how these islands looked over a century and a half ago! So many changes from then in my country! Worth to read if history of these islands group interests the average reader, not difficult to understand either.
The travel book written a century ago is pretty good, better than some others if that period, and covers a wide range of topics. He has definite bias: things Englush are good, things Catholic are bad. But he does well describing how Malta used to be, long ago. If interested in Malta and with a historical bent, this shouldn't be the first or second book you read on the subject (1565 and 1941 are more important), but probably it should be in the top dozen.
Wow, what detailed history by someone who visited the islands and wrote about it back in 1893. I live in Malta and really appreciate the book you sent to me. It was very informative on the history and struggles of that little chain of islands. I like these kinds of books that have been written long ago and now reprinted for us to enjoy.
We visited Malta in April, 2015 and found this book very helpful. The country has an amazing history and had we not read this, we could not have appreciated or enjoyed our visit as much as we did.
Not one of the best books of this type that I have read about Malta, although it did have some interesting chapters. The author tended to be too opinionated for my liking. Especially with reference concerning the Knights of St John. May be of interest to some readers , not really my cup of tea.
I slogged my way through half of this book and then gave up.Not that the Isle of Malta isn't interesting because. It certainly is. But by the time I'd gotten halfway I was tired of the author's pedantic Victorian conclusions as well as more than a mite offended by his antediluvian nattering criticism of the medieval Catholic Church. This is a thoroughly boring part history, part travelogue of a book that I might possibly give to my worst enemy if I were in a really, really foul mood.To call The Story of Malta dull is a definite understatement and the two stars I've given it are probably one too many.
Rather old and verbose, repating itself too often - nonetheless still interesting in some parts.
