The core themes of Straight to Hell survive attacks on its claims to credibility, and the book is not about boasting so much as entertainment. So should you read it? Maybe. It depends on your appetite for debauchery . . . Straight to Hell . . . offers a window into a deviant culture, and suggests the mechanisms by which it perpetuates itself, even in today’s climate.”NewsweekThere's no question that [LeFevre] knows his way around the business, and it's a dirty one. A great read.”Business InsiderLeFevre’s stories are eye-opening. Also I’m pretty sure he confesses to several felonies, and there’s a price-fixing conference in a Hong Kong hotel room that I hope he ran by his lawyer. But you don’t want to read about bond deals. John is not a very likeable person in most of these vignettes. As a result, the funniest story by far is when you picture him sitting on the toilet in a corporate jet, for once humiliated himself instead of dishing it out. Otherwise he comes off as an entitled elitist rich boy who never outgrows his immature prep school ways and squanders his career. Other reviews hint at proven exaggerations after fact checking, and he himself name drops several times that he was later hired as an MD by Goldman Sachs... conveniently omitting that although offered, it fell through and he never actually worked for GS. So add embellisher to the list. Not surprising then that he was assigned to the second tier markets of Europe and Asia, not in New York with the true masters of the universe. Maybe being a coked up, blackout drunk does limit one’s career. My other complaint was how he openly disparaged Filipino women as little brown love monkeys, and yet he was too afraid to print the punch line to a joke about Blacks which he himself didn’t even tell.On the positive side, I did find one or two of his tweets at the start of every chapter pretty funny. Finally, it would have been nice to end the book less abruptly. No brief update on the rest of his career, certainly no reflection on what he did and what he learned from it. You know he’s smart enough to realize what a jerk he was, yet there are no apologies and one senses he would do it all over again.
The book is really entertaining. All the deviance that are said about Wall Street is thoroughly pictures here. I did some research on the author and found some articles where they had done fact checks and interviews with his colleagues. Looks like fiction and exaggeration played a major role during the writing process. For example, one debunked story was the fight with Manchester United squad in Hong Kong. Based on the information the author provides about the deal he was working on when the fight happened, the timeline would suggest 2006. Apparently Manchester United never had any Hong Kong tour in 05, 06 or 07.But all in all, it's a very funny and entertaining read, which would probably make a good movie too.
Let's be real. This isn't a classic. This isn't literature. It's entertainment. But is it ever entertaining! I read this book quickly on a trip and couldn't help but laughing throughout out loud. Don't believe half of it, but the likely embellished stories are definitely a riot and worth the read.
The title is appropriate. The worst part about this book was that it ended. I could not put it down, and was entertained throughout. This even pushed my curiousity further into the business and other books of this nature.Glad I bought it, and I hope he writes more.
Having worked within the financial services industry, I found this book to be especially entertaining. It's a mashup of investment banking culture and "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell". I personally feel that if you do not have much exposure to financial lingo then it may be less entertaining to read. Additionally, if you are looking for a serious exposé on unethical business practices in Asian debt markets then I would give this a pass.
This book is laugh at loud hilarious on every page. Who would have thought that John could have gone through so many bags of cocaine on a random Tuesday? The storytelling is excellent.I would be interested to know how much the austerity (fake or otherwise) of the financial crisis has changed banking culture since John left the business and started peddling his sock startup.
Used for a college course
Very interesting read about one Wall Street veteran's wily experience of working for a bank processing bonds and aftermarket sordid affairs with liquor, cocaine, asian prostitutes, and rap music. Recommended book.
