Review

“Navigating the teen years is a challenge for many parents. This thoughtful, well-informed, and easy-to-read guide can help you understand how anxiety works, what makes it better, and what makes it worse. With a logical and systematic road map based in scientific research and clinical expertise, you can use effective strategies to support and coach your teen through anxiety, stress, and worry. A must-read!”—Aureen Wagner, PhD, adjunct associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, director at The Anxiety Wellness Center, and author of Worried No More“A wonderful addition to the self-help literature, Helping Your Anxious Teen details a specific, pragmatic action plan for parents of 13–19 year olds. The delicate balance of supporting teens emotionally without enabling their anxiety is nicely described, as is the way to teach skills without taking over. Worry, perfectionism, panic, and fear—this book covers anxiety in its many forms, bringing hope and, even more to the point, relief to struggling parents and teens.”—Dawn Huebner, PhD, psychologist and author of What to Do When You Worry Too Much“Helping Your Anxious Teen is an excellent resource for parents searching for thoughtful and effective strategies to effectively parent their anxious teen. The book is filled with useful advice and proven-effective techniques parents can use to guide their anxious teen through a critical time in their development.”—Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, codirector of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy; assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Berkeley; and coauthor of My Anxious Mind“Sheila Achar Josephs will teach you how to coach your teen to develop the valuable skills that can lead them toward a more flexible—and independent—path into adulthood.” —Reid Wilson, PhD, coauthor of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents“Helping Your Anxious Teen makes a valuable and impressive contribution by providing a clear, effective, and easy-to-read guide for parents to help their adolescent overcome anxiety. Chapters describe the nature of anxiety, how to understand its presentation, and, perhaps most importantly, how parents can help their teen conquer fear and stress. This book is a must-have for any parent of an anxious teen, as well as for providers who work with this population.”—Eric Storch, PhD, All Children’s Hospital Guild Endowed Chair and Professor at the University of South Florida, and clinical director at Rogers Behavioral Health-Tampa Bay“Anxiety is a cage that locks teens in, preventing them from fully engaging in life. Sheila Achar Josephs is a master clinician who gives parents the keys to help teens break free of fear-filled suffering and constraints.”—Eileen Kennedy-Moore, PhD, coauthor of Smart Parenting for Smart Kids“This terrific book puts the time-tested and research-proven strategies of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into a very readable format that will help you be a more effective coach and cheerleader when it comes to parenting your own anxious or stressed-out teen. You will find the numerous illustrative examples and step-by-step instructions for implementing the techniques extremely helpful. Every parent should read this book!”—Jonathan Abramowitz, PhD, director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Clinic at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"Parents, asserts psychologist Josephs, PhD, are crucial to helping their young teens overcome the vicious cycle of worry and fear. Demonstrating how persistent anxiety is a learned response, the author begins by explaining how an anxiety cycle operates (how thoughts and behaviors trigger ramped-up new thoughts and behaviors) and presents common approaches parents take that don’t work, such as jumping in with advice and contributing excessive reassurance. Instead, she encourages Socratic questions that help identify and challenge doubt. From teens who are constantly agitated to those caught in avoidance cycles and others struggling with perfectionism, Josephs looks at these experiences and offers thoughtful tools for helping young people help themselves. VERDICT: Recommended for public library collections." —Library Journal

This book coveys the message that powerful change can happen when we are brave and step into unknown. There are many books available in the market about teen anxiety, however this book is the most helpful in terms of clarity of text and conveying the message so clearly. I have read this book twice in order to help my daughter cope with her generalized anxiety. Scenarios and examples provided at the beginning of each chapter are very realistic and activities throughout the book are very helpful. My daughter was able to apply the strategies and manage some of her anxieties and fears related to perfectionism during high school phase. This book is divided into 10 chapters and starts with an introduction on adolescent fears and their anxieties. Then it talks about tips and strategies about what to do and not to do in order to help a teen as a teacher or parent. Next chapters go into details about various forms of anxiety including tried and tested strategies from Dr. Josephs many years of practice in this field. My favorite part is the last chapter that creates a road map for parents to apply Cognitive Behavior Therapy principles that can potentially prevent a teen from developing an anxiety disorder.Parents of middle school and high school kids would benefit from this book because it teaches strategies in Cognitive Behavior Therapy that can help a teen getting past being scared so they can learn new things.

I came across this book three weeks ago and I haven't been able to put it down ever since. I have lived with anxiety for the past four years... and I have read many books and done a lot of research on the subject with hopes to find ways to help me cope with my anxiety, but I haven't come across quite anything like this book. I have found it to be very easy and straightforward to read, but at the same time concentrated with useful knowledge and techniques essential to overcoming anxiety. I have been practicing these techniques whenever feeling very anxious, and I have to admit that I have already noticed some changes on how I react to daily stress... This book has helped me realize that I always have a choice to "step back" and reflect on whatever may be happening at that given moment, and then make a decision on how I react to it. I am so happy that I found this book.

This book offers practical advices, not just theories. It teaches parents what to say and do. Highly recommend.

Reading “Helping Your Anxious Teen” is as reassuring as having a consultation with an experienced therapist. Dr Josephs anticipates your questions, helps you understand your child’s anxiety, and most of all, gives you practical advice for parenting. As a psychologist, I especially like the tone, format, and clearly presented cognitive-behavioral information in the book. The author has a kind, empathic point of view while giving clear steps for parents to handle their child’s anxiety. There are a few phrases that stuck in my mind, such as, “to beat anxiety, we have to do the opposite of what it wants us to do”. There are chapters focusing on worrying, avoidance, social fears, perfectionism, irritability, panic, and stress in the family. You can read the whole book, or look immediately at the area most concerning to your child. This is one of the most useful self-help books I have read in a long time. I will be ordering waiting room copies and recommending this book to parents!

Although this book is for parents, I have also used it as an educator with students struggling with anxiety. As the parents of two very anxious children, one who also has OCD, Dr. Joseph’s book not only helped me to understand my teenager daughters’ anxiety but practical advice on how to help them cope. I love the way the book is organized so that I could easily access the chapters relevant to the issues my daughters have (perfectionism, panic, worrying). They both read certain chapters with me and found the techniques easy to understand and apply. This book opened the door of communication and we have had ongoing conversations since reading it together I feel that I have become more patient and understanding now that I understand how their fears take over making them feel powerless. In turn, my daughters have learned how to recognize their fears and make a choice on how they will respond to them. I highly recommend this book to parents of teens who struggle with anxiety. As both a parent and an educator for over 20 years, this has been one of the most helpful and practical books I have read on dealing with anxiety.

This book is direct and to the point, with clear explanations, checklists and questionnaires that get you thinking more objectively about your child's behavior so that you can take action and be an effective partner to your child in his or her battle with anxiety. This book helped me be more compassionate toward my daughter when irrational fears were overpowering her, and it gave me the words I needed to say to really help her - not just to regain calm for the moment, but to teach her how to manage her anxiety as she grows into adulthood. The examples in this book demonstrate how we as parents can use constructive dialogue to empower our children to win the battle -- and the war -- against anxiety so it doesn't get the best of them.

Reading this book has given me enormous help and insight into what my teenager goes through having anxiety. It is written in a straightforward easy way to understand. There are many techniques to help your child and yourself dealing with anxiety on a day to day basis. I would definitely recommend anybody going through this themselves or with their teenager reading this book.
