Review

"A must-read that topples the idea that emotions don't belong in the workplace, No Hard Feelings offers a path towards a future I want to work in: an emotionally expressive, yet respectful (and high-performing!) workplace." --Susan Cain, author of Quiet and Chief Revolutionary at Quiet Revolution   “No Hard Feelings is both a charming, sparkling read and a clear-eyed roadmap to harnessing the things that make us most human into tools that will make you more productive, effective, and happier at work. A must read for every leader and every aspiring leader.”  --Laszlo Bock, CEO of Humu and author of Work Rules!    “No Hard Feelings dispels the myth that there's no place for emotions at work. You can't communicate clearly unless you're aware of your own emotions, and the emotions you're sparking in others. You can't build productive relationships at work if you're showing up like a robot. This book will help you build the emotional discipline you need to succeed.” --Kim Scott, author of Radical Candor   “If you’ve ever thought it’s best to check your emotions at the office door, this book will change your mind. It’s full of lively illustrations and practical examples to show how you can harness emotions to become more creative, collaborative, and productive.” --Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals, Give and Take, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg   “Warm, witty, and wise, No Hard Feelings is the missing manual for reconciling emotions with professionalism--intelligently.” --Chip Conley, New York Times bestselling author and hospitality entrepreneur“Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy address the elephant in the room, dissecting the ways that emotions at the office impact our ability to lead and thrive at every level of our professional careers. With compassion, research, and clever comics (did I mention elephants?) No Hard Feelings makes a real attempt at digging deeper than introvert memes to address the reality of workplace emotions we all live with.”--Adam J. Kurtz, artist and author of Things Are What You Make of Them"Don’t send another email, attempt a serious conversation at work, or try to follow your intuition until you read this book. Your emotional intelligence at work is about to skyrocket. Equally valuable for the person who cries covertly in bathroom stalls and the kind who buries their emotions 20,000 leagues under the sea."--Dan Lyons, author of Disrupted and Lab Rats"The avenue for success and happiness at work, even life, lies with emotions. Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy do a phenomenal job of helping us see the way."--Chris Voss, author of Never Split The Difference"No Hard Feelings is one of the most original, insightful, and laugh out loud funny business books I've read in a long time. It will transform the way you think about the role of feelings in the workplace."--Cal Newport, author of Deep Work

I think this is such an important topic, I was super excited to read this book when it came out. But ultimately it was difficult to read and didn't grow my competence in this space.Writing:I felt like each paragraph was written on post-it notes, confusingly assembled, spliced with cute illustrations, and mixed with anecdotes called out in a different color. It seems like a randomly assembled set of blog posts. I had a hard time understanding how each paragraph and section built on each other. Yes, maybe they were related, but I wanted growth, expansion, to a crescendo of insight and conclusion. Instead my brain was constantly fighting the book thinking, where am I now, is this snippet important or that one?Content:The depth of each idea is therefore so unsatisfying. I want to spend money on a book to get further depth on a topic, and this just made me work so hard for the insight. The authors do a good job surveying current thought on the topic, but a sentence here about Adam Grant or a a quick picture about Seligman's 3Ps left me feel like this was a buffet of snippets of other people's ideas. It's hard for me to point out what specifically the authors are adding to this space, except to articulate that emotion is important at work. It is, and thank you for making that statement, but this book will not be the reference I use to make the argument to my colleagues. This is an important topic, and the illustrations are good. (thus a 2 star rating) . But this isn't the book to start the revolution that's needed. I ultimately feel tricked by the business publishing industry that took successful blog content, repackaged it in a common format with varying colors, pictures, and a take away section, and smattered some good endorsements. Penguin, I want my time back.

Everyone should read this book, if you’re just entering the workforce, the CEO or someone in between. It’s helpful for millennials and their bosses to bridge the communication divide. The comics are brillant and I’ve alreay used a couple in some feedback sessions. Highly recommend as gifts or for self improvement. So many times during this book I thought “wow that’s me” or “oops, I better stop/start doing that”.

Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy courageously acknowledge how our human emotions don’t just fade away once we pull into our workplace parking lots, and then take it a step further to address, “What happens then?!”“No Hard Feelings,” is an insightful, witty, and relatable read, providing useful tools and tactics that anyone could implement for managing emotions at work.Additionally, the illustrations are incredibly accurate depictions of some of the most common, real-world, sticky situations and keep you smiling through each chapter. A must read for anyone in the workplace and a great gift for teams looking to connect in more meaningful and effective ways.

As a young professional in a workplace with a lot of older colleagues, it can be hard to know how much of my "self" to bring to and share at work. This book provides helpful tips for how to handle different work situations and embrace the emotions that we often try to push away. The book is full of hilarious and relatable comics that made realize how universal many of my feelings are and the authors' personal anecdotes are interesting and entertaining!

It's like "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk", but for adults talking to each-other.

This release of this book is perfectly timed with the revolution that's occurring in the work place right now. Bringing your whole self to the office is a hot topic and this book navigates through those challenges with humor and character. Highly recommend this read for anyone who has a job. Anyone.

I received the book yesterday and the cover is damaged ???

I just started managing people and this has been an indispensable guide for me. For instance, I'm really puzzled about how open to be with my reports about my emotional life, and the authors talk through examples of fancy executives navigating the same stuff and spell out some simple rules around these issues. I've also been benefiting from their concrete advice about how to improve decisions in the hiring process, an area that can fluster me substantially. They write in lively prose, sprinkle in fun quotes from Seinfeld and Beyonce, and always give actionable ways to take their findings into the workplace. And the comics are awesome. They make the reading enjoyable and hammer key points home. The most useful thing the book has done is help me realize this unhealthy bias I have where I think everything depends on me: "Have you ever gotten sick and been surprised to find your office didn't come to a crashing halt while you were out?" Whoa, yes! And now that I've noticed it, maybe I should start thinking differently...I love this book and the lessons it's taught me.
