About the Author

Dr. Cornelia E. Davis, better known as Connie, is an author, speaker, renowned epidemiologist and disease detective. She was sent by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Ethiopia in 1990 to help African Ministries of Health prevent or control outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. While working in Addis Ababa, she was caught up in the fast-moving civil war and stayed behind as Acting Director of the WHO EPR Centre when UN staff were evacuated. A series of events led her to a three-month-old infant found on the steps of St. George's Cathedral. She described this exciting adventure in her new memoir, Three Years in Ethiopia.Connie was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended Gonzaga University, and was one of the first black women admitted to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (1968). After finishing a pediatric residency, she was hired by WHO to work in the Smallpox Eradication Program in India (1975-77). This highly successful program changed her medical focus and inspired her first book, Searching for Sitala Mata: Eradicating Smallpox in India.Connie earned her Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and went on to work in the EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. For the next 30 years, she battled disease outbreaks in Africa and Asia for WHO and USAID. An intrepid world traveler, she has worked in or traveled to 97 countries and territories. She lives on the northern shores of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara, Mexico.

Even though the events are several years in the past, the author's recall is still so vividly alive with the emotions of her experience. The uncertainties of living in a war torn country are not something most of us will ever know and the majority of us would probably have taken the first available flight back to "civilization." But the author is plucky, tenacious, optimistic and just a little bit cynical...all traits that serve her well. Her love for what she is does and the determination to find the child she wants to adopt make it a story that goes beyond an account of living through a civil war.

A memoir of a courageous and adventurous woman who embarks on a journey to adopt a baby in Ethiopia while working for the World Health Organization. Follow her as she overcomes the obstacles presented by epidemics and an ever-encroaching civil war. Letting her intuition guide her, she stays true to her quest to find the daughter of her dreams. The book will capture you on both a personal and historical level.

A fascinating write up of a doctors work in Ethiopia. An adventure which also introduces many interesting facts about Ethiopia.I really liked the book and recommend it.

Well written solid narrative recounting time in war torn Ethopia of young American doctor. I read this compelling and dramatic memoir--really a love story--in a single sitting and definitely recommend it.

Cornelia Davis tells her story as though she was sitting the room with you. Her her actions are bold and effective. It is an exciting tale of another world to us Westerners. Also, it is filled with facts and history that one would not come across. An exciting read AND a true story. Kudos!

This book unfolds a deeply personal experience of a woman adopting a child who otherwise faced a bleak, uncertain future. It also offers a compelling view of history at the personal level, which is always more fascinating than scholars and the media can offer. Read it!
