Review

How Smart Machines Think is an enjoyable and insightful 'look under the hood' at recent AI developments. Gerrish introduces complex and important concepts in terms that any reader can understand.―Ray Kurzweil, Author of New York Times bestsellers, How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed and The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend BiologyAn excellent layman's introduction to contemporary AI and machine learning. Gerrish clearly explains the key ideas behind the winning entries in various recent high-profile competitions, such as the DARPA Grand Challenge for self-driving cars and the Jeopardy! Challenge for question-answering. In addition, he emphasizes the role of collaborative human effort in building these systems, both in terms of openly publishing basic research, as well as carrying out the relevant engineering. This more nuanced portrait of progress makes claims of AI autonomously taking over the world much less worrisome.―Kevin Murphy, Senior Staff Research Scientist, Google, and Author of Machine Learning: A Probabilistic ApproachIf you're curious about what made some of the recent AI successes possible, from winning at Go to self-driving cars, this fascinating book is for you.―Pedro Domingos, Professor of Computer Science, and Author of The Master Algorithm, The University of Washington

Dr. Sean Gerrish formerly an engineering manager at Google and now of Teza Technologies sets the benchmark for understandable explanations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. When Arthur C. Clark said that "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", he may have implied that even with a cursory explanation of the area of study used in developing this technology and a listing of its potential promise, those reading the explanation may still be so baffled by its workings that they still think its workings are incomprehensible magic. Dr. Gerrish carefully goes beyond such explanations to provide a high-level explanation of the workings of these programs and devices, and presents explanatory diagrams of their functioning so that both a layman and someone lost in the code can understand the workings of these technologies.Among the important hardware and software technologies covered in detail in this average length book are:autonomous (self-driving) cars, Netflix's recommendation algorithms, IBM's Watson championship Jeopardy player, programs defeating the world champion Chess and Go players and those designed for competition with real-time interactive strategy games such as StarCraft. As one who has poured through coding examples for Deep Learning Frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras and PyTorch I found the intermediate level explanations of the various types of Neural Nets used in Deep Learning invaluable. In fact, after studying several books covering Deep Learning and Artificial Neural Networks I found Gerrish's explanations the most illuminating on how they actually work. This book not only provides new insights into Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and their most important applications: it also provides beginners and experts a new standard of the sort of explanation and models they should look for in any technology overview.I cannot express adequately my respect for this book and its author.--Ira Laefsky, MS Engineering and Wharton MBA, formerly on the Senior Consulting Staff of Arthur D. Little, Inc. and Digital Equipment Corporation. Currently an Independent HCI Researcher

Sean Gerrish explains how AI works, clearly and correctly, without getting into the mathematical formalism. He takes you as close as it is possible to get to full understanding without getting your hands dirty in writing code. He helps to clarify what AI can do (and how it does it), probably will be able to do in the future, and probably will not be able to do unless and until revolutionary advances are made. The book takes all the mystery out of why self-driving cars never seem to get any closer to realization and how AI bots have been able to defeat the best human players of tough games like chess and go. In the process Gerrish tells us a lot about the human stories of the pioneers and leaders in the field.
