This is a really good book. Often you will see photos like some of those in the book with no explanation of their origin. This book is going to make a great reference for amateur and professional genealogists.

This volume is a look into the time of explicit slavery and the later Jim Crow. Pictures tell a story that words cannot. I have seen some of these before, but most of them, if not all, are new to me. The text is adequate to its task. I have given two of these to my oldest great-grandchildren, but I know that they will circulate throughout the households and help them to see into those times.

A picture IS worth a thousand words! I thought I understood some things about slavery. I was dead wrong. This book may shock you and make you think and that is what good books do. Hats off to Deborah Willis!

Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery is a compelling expansion of what emancipation meant to those black Americans who were once enslaved and those very few who were not -- and to their descendants -- in the decades when most white Americans still refused to live up to the American ideal.

Deb Willis has written more on black photographers and the impact of photography on African Americans then anyone else I can think of -- all of her books are in my collection -- and I look forward to the next and the next.....

Amazing book on Slavery. It has stories from people who lived this horror to write about it. I think this should be reading for junior high students.

You cannot find find these pictures in just books,,,tell you the pain sorrow and hope of slaves. You can see freedom burning in their eyes!
