Very impressive narrative of a true warrior. It establishes the rationale for how a war is won but also the terrible sacrifice required.

Very realistic description of a very difficult war experience. As a pilot myself I could relate to the situations described.

The first two chapters we’re left out. When he talks about being in Southern CA going to school. That’s kind of important to his story.

The first two third was exciting and definitely one of best air combat books I be read. But the last portion had some rough spots for me. First I did not feel he cared much for Americans and more specifically our Air Force. Every time he referred to them it was with disrespect and very cynical. Referring to their poor skills and implying that they contributed very little. He made a big issue that they exaggerated their scores. Point many pilots did this unintentionally French British even the Germans unaware I the heat of combat that possibly more than one pilot was shooting at an enemy. I stated this but implied only USA pilots were guilty. For me some of the factual comment especially the long listing were in necessary.Overall a good book and if all he wrote was true he was outstanding. Book was well written over all and worth reading.. If he’d have kept his biased criticism of the USA pilots out of it its the best true one.

This was an extraordinary account of a man who surely was one of the best pilots of WWII, simply by the fact that he survived so long in the staggeringly dangerous circumstances that comprised the life of an RAF fighter pilot. No discussion of his life outside the squadron, just accurate and detailed description of what it was like to fly the missions and watch virtually every other pilot around you die in the process.

Anyone with illusions of glory in being a WW II fighter pilot needs to read this book. The author pulls no punches.
