For any longtime reader of “Eyeshield 21″, you can’t help but feel the excitement as the underdogs, Deimon High Devil Bats continue their goal of making it into the Christmas Bowl.In the last few volumes, we have seen them take on the powerful Shinryuji Nagas who have won the Kanto tournament for nine years straight. And as it looked as if the Nagas had their way of the Devil Bats, Deimon High has managed to stage a comeback and bring the game within seven points with a few minutes left on the clock. With the 23rd volume of “Eyeshield 21″, it’s about teamwork and can the Devil Bats find a way to win this game?I have been a big fan of sports-based manga and in Japan a lot of their sports manga and anime are big hits. From the soccer-driven series “Captain Tsubasa”, the basketball series “Slam Dunk”, the baseball series “Touch”, the tennis series “Tennis no Oujisama” (Prince of Tennis) and many of them have this underdog vs. the better team type of mentality.Yes, there is a banality when it comes to sports manga series but there is often this side of supernatural element that an athlete has.A super kick, a special tennis serving or hitting ability and with “Eyeshield 21″, what makes the series so exciting is that every team has its special individuals with unique talents. But when it comes to the Deimon Devil Bats (the protagonist team), these guys are like a group of misfits put together in hopes to accomplishing their goal of making it to the Christmas Bowl. But they are surely talented.Sena (Eyeshield 21) has this special ability of his running and in this latest volume, he hones that talent and makes himself even better. We also see new characters pop up and joins the team and definitely see how everyone works together, faces adversity together as a team. But for Deimon High School, these bunch of misfits have pride and also have what it takes to surprise everyone they have come up against.Similar to other sports anime in which there is an underdog getting involved with sports and displays a tremendous skill, “Eyeshield 21″ definitely showcases that into the storyline but with the characters, in this case the team is more like the “Bad News Bears” and with the “The Devil Bats”, the team consists of characters that are just wild and crazy. Actually, all teams have characters that are wild and crazy and I suppose that is what makes “Eyeshield 21″ so interesting and enjoyable. But volume 23 is an exciting manga volume because we know the Nagas are a powerful team, but if there is one thing that teams have learned about the Deimon Devil Bats…never count them out!If you are looking for a sports manga series, “Eyeshield 21″ is definitely a manga worth checking out! Recommended!

An amazing series!!!! I love it so much and I just wish it was on Kindle!!!

So it's the end of the Shinryuuji game and the Devilbats have to decide whether they'll try to tie their rival to drive them into overtime or actually take a gamble and push for a touchdown right on this final play. For some reason I just love that Hiruma's Devilbats are known as an offensive team (haha, in more ways than one); they always go for the gamble, and they don't play it safe. But since the longer these guys play and try to hold their own against genius Agon Kongo, the higher their chances of folding because they don't have the stamina and they're all worn out. It's really interesting that Hiruma would (of course) have chosen to gamble and Kurita would have chosen the safer move, but they decide to put it on Sena. What I really particularly love about this volume is Agon getting his butt handed to him because Deimon didn't underestimate him, knew what he was capable of, and strove to use his assumptions against him. Hiruma actually managed to outrun him (with the surprise lead he tricked Shinryuuji into giving him), and they managed to sort of combine a "safe" move with a gamble that could turn into either based on what the defense did. I love seeing Agon claiming his dream team is a whole team of himself, and how Hiruma knows that would be easy to beat (and proves it). Agon isn't just a humiliated opponent, though. He's spoiled because he's used to effortless ability outclassing everyone he has to fight, and he didn't bank on others training beyond him or believe he would get anything out of pushing himself to be more. After the Devilbats are looking to the next step on their way to the Christmas Bowl, they get to watch the other teams do their thing. They see their old opponents the Taiyo Sphinx from Kantou having to fight the Hakushu Dinosaurs, and even spend some time building up these guys' back stories. Of course we already know the backgrounds of Harao (the weak and spoiled quarterback protected by his awesome line), Banba, Kasamatsu, and Kamaguruma, but now we get to see the Dinosaurs in action, most notably the monstrous freshman Gao. And he's not just an unhinged ball of destruction (anything like Ikari, you know?)--he is smashing and destroying the other teams deliberately, to the point that their quarterbacks are injured beyond ability to play. (That's kind of Harao's nightmare. He's nothing if his line gets destroyed, and getting tackled by Gao doesn't just mean a sack; it means you go to the hospital.) So, Hiruma gets a nice preview of what he's facing if the Christmas Bowl is next for Deimon. He'll be targeted and probably crushed. But they have to beat Oujou first. Easier said than done.I love how even the teams that are basically put there to lose to more powerful teams are given some background. The Misaki Wolves rely on speed but don't really have the necessary strength to get past Seibu. (I thought it was funny how Seibu and Oujou were already talking like they were going to be in the semifinals even though they both had to beat another team first, Kamiya kept getting pissed that the Wolves were being written off before they got to play. Also, this manga frequently tries to give people names that are a play on words, so I thought it was weird for the quarterback's first name to be "Taiga." A tiger is a cat, not a dog, which is not exactly appropriate for a wolf-based team.) The Sado Strong Golems are all about having rock-hard bodies, but that doesn't hold up too well against someone like Shin whose spear-tackle-turned-trident-tackle can pierce stone. (Though I was not a big fan of the heteronormative nonsense handed down to the Golems about how to aim for the chest because "all men like boobs!" but later "but real men don't like EACH OTHER'S boobs!") Shin being straightforward and honest about improving himself and asking Riku to teach him his signature move was pretty awesome. Now Deimon has to figure out how to fight a vastly improved Oujou when they've already lost once to this team. . . .
