Review
The clearest and most useful book on the basics: This book presents an excellent and comprehensive overview of Gurdjieff's "the work" with wonderfully clear examples and explanations of its practical applications. Best book about The Work: Until I found your book, the literature (Commentaries, etc.) about the Work was quite immense and confusing. Now I am able to do the practices and find my life and my self changing at long, long last. Friedman’s book has translated Gurdjieff into ordinary understandable English. I would highly recommend this book as a place to start. I have more than 50 books on Gurdjieff’s and Ouspensky’s Work on my shelves, but this is no doubt the most practical one for beginners. I want to express my appreciation for for your Beginner's Guide to Guerdjieff's philosophy. Before reading your book, I have read several books on Guerdjieff, and at times, got lost in the complexity of what I was reading, and left wondering. It is not until I read your book, that Gurdjieff's philosophy emerged to the light, and resonated deeply within me.

About the Author
Friedman was born in a log cabin in the South, the South Bronx, He has always kept his New York accent. He attended P.S. 95, a public grammar school, and DeWitt Clinton High School, an all boys public high school. He started the University of Michigan at 17 but was unprepared socially. This has been his modus operandi throughout life. He then spent six months in active duty and five and half years in the reserve. After active service, he attended UCLA studying for a PhD in Clinical Psychology, but after two and a half years, he flunked out. He worked as a research psychologist in the defense industry for eighteen months, and then not knowing what to do, he applied to law school since there were no requirements other than having a B.A. On a lark, he applied to Harvard Law School, and much to his amazement, was accepted. At Harvard, he was one of the students there who made the top half of the class possible. After graduation, he settled in San Francisco where he obtained a job in a small firm in San Carlos, about 25 miles south of the city. While there he created, The Goldwater Calendar: Time for a Change??? about Barry Goldwater, the Republican candidate in the 1964 presidential election. After six months at the San Carlos firm, he was fired, one of the happiest days of his life. He next worked as a lawyer in a mixed neighborhood in San Francisco which he enjoyed, but had the thought he wanted to be a university teacher. While teaching Business Law at the University of Connecticut, he wrote his unpublished book about auto insurance entitled Are You Being Taken For a Ride? A chapter of the book entitled 'Why Auto Insurance Rates Keep Going Up' was published in the September 1969 issue of The Atlantic. After one year at Uconn, he came back to San Francisco to the hippie revolution. As a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Alameda County, he reached the pinnacle of his writing career having five articles published in The New Republic in the space of seven months. After eighteen months at Legal Aid, he was asked to leave because he wasn't filing any big issue cases. He had a few thousand in the bank and wondered if he could go a few months without a job. The legal aid job was the last job Friedman ever had with the exception of teaching Family Law at Warwick University in Coventry, England for eighteen months, which was more of a vacation than a job, but the vacation abruptly ended when he received an advance to write a book on English divorce laws

Mr. Friedman has produced a reasonable summary of the Gurdjieff ideas and praxis, informed principally (and largely with accuracy) by the extensive Commentaries of Maurice Nicoll. The author has strung together the sections of the book in a logical fashion, although, as Ouspensky once said, the ideas seem to have an organic logic all their own.Practice is emphasized over theory, though of course some minimal structure is needed for one’s personal work to be profitably organized. This need is adequately addressed, but there appears to be a significant departure from principle in the paragraph introducing the Enneagram at the end of the Chief Feature section. While I’m no defender of any orthodoxy, and the theory of personality types is duly noted as being outside Work ideas, it is worth the time to make a couple of points about this. As a relatively advanced topic, the Enneagram is given woefully superficial treatment by this association with so-called personality types. “Type†in work jargon refers to essence, rather than personality. Even if a relation of acquired personality to inborn essence could be speculatively advanced, and those categories enumerated as given here, what benefit would that have for the potential growth of understanding? Worse than none, as this kind of increase in “knowledge†is almost tailor-made to arrest the kind of unbiased efforts leading to “being†which are acknowledged by Friedman as paramount.Since Mr. Friedman states on page one his motive in writing is to see if this re-organization of Work ideas can improve his own application of them to his life, I hope that he and his other readers can take my caveat in the spirit of helpfulness intended for it. As for me, I am probably going to get the most benefit from the author’s generous sharing of his experiences in trying to apply these ideas in his own life.
The knowledge and intent of this author's book is perfect and should warrant a solid 5 star recommendation however,I can't give this work five stars because it needs professional editing not only to tighten up the content, but also the message. For me to award this book five stars based solely on the message is telling everyone reading this review that the book is excellent in all the qualities expected in a book and this work falls short of that common, unspoken expectation.I would like to see the author (Friedman), have this work professionally edited and the message tightened up and the book will, (in my opinion), be a first class, solid introduction of the Fourth Way hands down.
This is a fantastic beginners guide and I also found it enjoyable to read. It's a very grounded and down to earth approach to extremely intellectually rich esoteric teachings. I found Gil Friedman's, "Gurdjieff A Beginner's Guide" to be the door opener for deeper exploration of teachings from Gurdjieff. Since I was introduced to Gurdjieff I've been wrapping my mind around Gurdjieff's books, and books written by others, such as Bennet, Nicoll, and Ouspensky. Â The "new" language, definitions, and basic ideas to observe yourself and life events, i found to be stimulating and challenging, yet I was overwhelmed doing it on my own. Â Friedman's book gave me the basic outline organized in a way I could follow and make sense of. Gil's book has helped me embrace the teachings by giving me some the basic terminology to digest and in this way, the bigger picture of esoteric teachings became clearer and within reach. Its helped me to make the first steps in the Work as seen by Gurdjieff. I was also inspired by Gil's book to start my own Gurdjieff reading group, which is one of the best things that came for me by reading it. Friedman even gives some suggested methods for meetings. I'm very grateful that Gil has taken the time to put this guide together. Â And i thank two of my dearest teachers who recommended this book to me. They themselves have a Gurdjieff group and everyone has added Gil Friendman's A Beginner's Guide to their reference materials for the Work.AlaskaSharon
This was an excellent and accessible introduction to an elusive school of thought that can greatly impact and benefit the wellbeing of anyone's daily life. There is also a great section at the end on how to approach and in what order to read the many books by Gurdjieff and his students. Thank you Mr Friedman for shedding some light on this subject :)
I thorough enjoyed the content (of course) and very readable style of this book. I have read a couple of other books on the Work and how to start/apply it and would recommend this book widely for beginners to get a good and simple introduction to some of the core concepts of the Work.
This book presents an excellent and comprehensive overview of Gurdjieff's "the work" with wonderfully clear examples and explanations of its practical applications. This is unusual. I've been interested in this stuff for over twenty years and have done a fair of amount of dabbling and a lot of reading, including some very limited work at the Foundation in New York. But the actual daily usefulness of the work, and ways of really incorporating it into one's life so that the exercises carry over, that was always a missing link until I read this book. It's wonderfully clear. I recommend it for anyone interested in Gurdjieff or anyone wondering whether they're interested.
This book is a concise, simple and very practical exposition of the Fourth way and it's teachings. It helped me convert work terms and practices from knowledge to understanding. The author speaks from personal experience and through practical day to day examples. He explains foundational work ideas in a clear and understandable manner and by order of relevance. This is an excellent book if you are struggling or feel stuck in certain areas of understanding the work. You are never left in the dark with this book...you can feel the author's care and conscientious effort to help the reader get the most out of it. This book was nothing short of transformative for me and I encourage all who are interested in the work to read it
