I read all the reviews prior to embarking on this epic read reading Blackest Night (BN) and Blackest Night Green Lantern (GL43-52) simultaneously in the order they were published: basically BN0-BN6 switching back and forth with GL43-49 followed by GL50-51, BN7, GL 52 and finally concluding in BN8. Does it help that much understanding this story? Not that much with the exception BN8 wraps things up and is the bridge to Brightest Day. You could read these 2 graphic novels independently and remain just as confused. It does help to read the books prior to this especially the 2 preludes to Blackest Night which are Rage of the Red Lanterns (red power of rage) and Agent Orange (Orange power of Avarice), less so on the endless Sinestro Corps (the yellow power of fear).I give the art work 5 stars and the story 3 stars. The story is very very long if we go back to the various preludes such as Rebirth and Fear leading to Sinestro Corps with endless battles, endless flashbacks, annoying redundancies. It is a classic battle of evil (black, death) and good (white, life). It's uniqueness is to be found in the use of different colored lantern corps with assigned emotions or attributes. Only through the combination of these colors and powers/emotions/attributes does light (absence of color) emerge victorious, the exact opposite you would expect, since all colors combined really equal blackness. This quasi-philosophical graphical novel is entertaining but drags and we learn that chaotic and emotional life is better than a boring universe which is at peace through the blackness of death. So now we wait for Brightest Day for the conclusion.

All through the book, there were these moments when you expected things to suddenly turn and get better, because some new, more powerful hero had arrived... someone who could blast harder and punch faster or destroy better... and every single time, the situation became more hopeless. That's the best of Green Lantern... Hal doesn't win by punching harder or moving faster, Hal wins by inspiring hope in those around him, and by understanding the situation in a unique way. This book, Blackest Night, does that as well or better than any GL book I've ever read, and the epic conclusion literally had me in tears. A brilliant piece of work.

This is a multi part story that is a mix of emotions, literally. The first few parts of the story are very slow, stick with it, it gets better. The art is nice and for a newbie to the storyline it was not intimidating to read.I read this because I wanted some back story on the characters from Injustice 2, and this is where I decided to start, to see if I could follow an arc and to see if I wanted to read more. Thankfully the first parts being slow didn't intimidate me. I had fun with this read and will read more DC comics in the future.

I hate DC for not compiling Blackest Night into a series of chronological volumes. I had to shuffle between this and Green Lantern: Blackest Night to make sense of things : (That said, Blackest Night easily matches, perhaps surpasses, any of the "Crises" that have come before this in the DC Universe. I know it's a cliche, but this event leaves behind a permanently changed DCU behind. I absolutely love what Geoff Johns has done with the GL mythos in general, expanding it from an almost simplistic will vs fear to (effectively) a spectrum of 9 corps - VIBGYOR plus White and Black.A word on the art as well - there are some panels in this comic book that remind us why the word EPIC exists. Amazing detail, and mind-blowing cluster-$%^&s abound. I look forward to watching the continuing careers of Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, and Joe Prado with great interest. My mind is still reeling with the epic-ness of the story and the art.I think this title validated for me the decision to bring the Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen) back to life. I also liked how (by stories end) it tries to explain how/ why all the resurrections that have happened to date in the DCU make (some sort of) sense. I still think The Flash: Rebirth was crap, and it feels like a bad, unnecessary link between Final Crisis (where Barry Allen returned) and this book, where he really shines. His dynamic with Hal Jordan is just fantastic to read. This story works like a game of chess, as armies are assembled on both sides, and the endgame proves to hold many many surprises. This is where I have to moan a little however, because much of the stage setting for this chess game happens "off board" if this book is all you're reading. See, this collects the limited series issues Blackest Night 1 - 7, but you also need to read the parallel series - Green Lantern vol 9: Blackest Night (collecting issues 43 - 52), and Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night - if you are to truly make sense of everything. I only read the first, and not the second, but felt like I didn't miss much. If I hadn't read GL 43 - 52 though, I'd have had several WTF moments while reading this book. Why DC? Why couldn't you just publish a chronologically ordered single/ multiple volume TPB ed for Blackest Night? As things stand, people have to rely on reading orders and concordances to make sense of it. (Not to mention buy additional books). I'm quite tempted to dock a star from my rating for this reason, but the story is just magnificent, so I haven't the heart
