This book came out in the early 70's when the veneer of the ABA was coming off. Meshery is a great writer and gives an inside look at a league that was wild and fun at times but as the book shows, too unstable to last. The league did last three more years after Meshery left the Cougars. You don't have to be a basketball fan to enjoy this.

Tom Meschery spent over a decade as a forward with the San Francisco Warriors and Seattle SuperSonics of the NBA prior to retiring in 1971. Plans to work with the Peace Corps in Asia fell through, so he was willing to accept a head coaching job with the Carolina Cougars of the rival ABA for the 1971-72 season. This book is a day-by-day diary of Meschery's one-year experience in the ABA before he was fired after barely missing the playoffs and replaced by Larry Brown as coach in 1972."Caught in the Pivot" has been a personal favorite of mine since it came out while I was in high school because for years, it stood as the only book dedicated to the ABA that wasn't a season guide. Meschery is a bright, perceptive man who had published a book of poetry while he was an active player, to date the only pro basketball player ever to do so. His dealings with owners, players, agents, sportswriters and fellow coaches are well-chronicled here so you get a good microcosmic look of what the ABA was like through the eyes of someone going through his first year in the league after a decade playing in the NBA. Meschery is equally amused and angered by what he sees going on around him, and his observations include living south of the Mason-Dixon Line in the Seventies after a near-lifetime on the West Coast ("culture shock" wasn't a used phrase, but it could've been).If you've read Terry Pluto's landmark ABA history, "Loose Balls," this is like icing on the cake because while Pluto's tome is based on what dozens of people say about the ABA's nine-year lifespan, "Caught in the Pivot" narrows the focus to one team and the one man coaching them (plus it's the only published first-person diary of the ABA written while the league was active). Historic, entertaining and a very good read.
