About the Author

Grant Corriveau has been an aviator, one way and another, for a long time. As a kid he built plastic aircraft models and by the power of imagination soared into the skies. Later in life he learned to fly real rag-wing Fleet Canucks, then moved on step-by-step towards ever larger and faster aircraft. Along the way, as a flight instructor, he helped uplift others to see for themselves the joys and challenges of flying. For a summer, he seeded thunderstorms along the foothills of Alberta. Then, he became an airline pilot and spent the next thirty years transporting people across North America and the Caribbean. Just before retiring, he built and flew his own kit airplane and was thrilled how, during the first test flight, the wings stayed on. Over the years, he has learned to be thankful for the many people who helped him -- uplifted him -- along the way; family, friends, colleagues and strangers. He currently lives on Vancouver Island with his wife and greatest friend, France. He recently obtained his glider pilot license and enjoys sharing his stories through his writing.

Growing up around an Air Force base (my father was a civilian employee) airplanes were part of my life from the very beginning. I am still an airplane fan to this day and am always willing to spend time at any active airport which has a viewing area. I am also a flight simmer (Microsoft FSX) and have been for nearly two decades. (I am also writing this review as I listen via an aviation website to HF Oceanic traffic!)So when I saw Grant Corriveau's book of his experiences as an airline pilot in Canada on NetGalley, I requested a copy to read and was graciously granted that request by the publisher, CWR Press. Thank you CWR Press!Uplift: A Pilot's Journey is a wonderful memoir about one man's love of aviation and his career as a pilot in now legendary aircraft which I had the privilege of flying when they were in active service - the DC-9 and the Boeing 727 (which was the first passenger jet I first flew in over 40 years ago)Uplift is a simple but wonderful telling of the personalities and planes of one pilot's career. It is not melodramatic narrative but it does include some stressful moments when the control of an aircraft requires a sixth sense, based on experience and an intuitive feel, is needed. It is not a 'kiss and tell' book but it does include Corriveau's assessment of passengers and cockpit crew who challenged his sanity and patience at times. If you are looking for more drama in the skies, this is not the book for you. But if you, or someone you know, loves aviation, Uplift is a great book which gives a detailed but varied view of life in the cockpit of a commercial airline pilot, who loved his job.I really enjoyed this book as it was a simply wonderful book to read abut a pilot who enjoyed flying and yet looked beyond his job and gave thought to a view that life has a spiritual dimension that we need to consider.I gave this book a four-star review on Goodreads.Note: I received an electronic ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a review. In Uplift, Grant Corriveau describes his journey from his beginnings on smaller planes to ultimately achieving his goal in becoming a commercial airline captain. Though there isn’t the polish to this book as to memoirs taken on by bigger publishers, Corriveau has played to his writing strengths in making each chapter a snippet of either his experiences in the sky and, occasionally in life. Each chapter is short but enlightening with a glimpse into commercial aviation in its training or regulations, pilot experiences and all the in between. Throughout, Corriveau keeps an upbeat attitude and the effect is indeed “uplifting” in its approachable dialogue to the reader with small life lessons as well as entertaining stories like that of a captain Corriveau worked being mid air when he realized he had left his car parked at the drop off gate with the keys still in it. I also highly recommend the rules of flying at the end which had me laughing out loud as I read them.Each industry has its own jargon and culture and pilots have often been shrouded in a sort of mystery. Corriveau demystifies some of the job and the industry that goes with it while still inspiring a heavy respect for those who navigate our airways. An enjoyable light read.My thanks to the publisher, CWR Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have a bit more than a passing interest in flight. I once considered getting a license, but never got around to it. Instead, I enjoy my app that tracks the planes I see coming and going from our local airport. When I fly, I sit in the window seat so I can watch the flaps and ailerons. I listen to the pilot channel when it's available. So when I picked up Grant Corriveau's book I was enthralled from the first page. A fascinating narrative of the adventures of a developing airline pilot -- easy reading with plenty of energy, humor and enough technical stuff to be exciting. Corriveau also sprinkles life lessons throughout -- so you feel uplifted without having been preached at.

A very fun, entertaining book about the life of an airline pilot. A GREAT summer read!!! Learning about what actually goes on the flight deck of an aircraft is both enlightening, humorous, and interesting. Each chapter is self contained, so it can be easily read in short snippets. A big plus if you are traveling or out and about this summer and want a book to read.

If you ever wondered about the aviation industry, if you yearn for the pre 9-11 days when passengers used to be able to visit the flight deck... if you want to be inspired and "uplifted" about the miracle of flight, this is a superb book... good for those summer days.... and good for reading while on a plane as well. Anything but dry -- warm, engaging and sometimes LOL funny. Highly recommend this book.

A most interesting read about what really goes on in the cockpit. The pressures of landing during intense weather is especially compelling. I sense that men will likely find this interesting, although the author speaks most favorably about the female pilots and first officers he flew with. A great summers read.

I loved Captain Grant's "breezy" writing style, filled with insider airline info and humorous stories about his "in-flight" experiences -- from flight training on up through the ranks to being a captain. "Uplift" is a fun read with a great message for all -- never give up on your dreams.
