Two things come to mind here: One, that in 2016 we can't truly comprehend what a Big Deal the Hilton sisters were in their day, nor do we have much understanding now of the vaudeville craze that birthed their fame. And Two, that the author is to be commended for remaining a student of biography and not stooping to some of the sleazy directions this book could have taken.I found this a fascinating, absorbing and ultimately tragic assessment of two women who were exploited practically from birth, as well as an insightful and colorful dive into the times in which they lived.I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but as some readers have already suggested, felt that I never knew Daisy or Violet as individuals. The author goes to great pains to make sure the reader knows they were two very different women -- which indeed, obviously, they were -- without really telling us who either of them was outside being individual halves of "the girls," "the sisters," or "the twins." This perhaps is a disservice.I'm a huge history buff, and a great lover of biographies, and over the course of that predilection have read scores of human stories, including a couple of books on Eng and Chang Bunker. In some of the Bunker biographies, I felt that I came away with more insights into what it really might be like to go through life literally attached to another human being, especially in an era in which separation was not possible. (And even today is often not possible, depending on the physiology of the connection.) I didn't feel the same emphasis on the individuals here, and found myself wanting to know much more about these women beyond who chose to be blonde and who chose to be brunette.Other than that somewhat empty frustration, I found this a very enjoyable read.An excellent companion to this book is the documentary "Bound by Flesh," another insightful and well-researched biography of Daisy and Violet.
The Hilton Sisters were stars before my time. I have been fascinated by Daisy and Violent after I saw the movie FREAKS, and the interest in them and the others in that movie touched my heart. I could not imagine growing up with any of their conditions, and I came away from the film realizing none 0of them felt sorry for themselvesI have had it in my mind to one day look up reading material on sisters' background. Someone I know was involved in the Broadway musical, SIDE BY SIDE, and was blown away learning a lot more about them, which only fascinated me even more. The writer of this book obviously did a ton of research! After enduring abuse in their young lives, they eventually became stars of the stage. Daisy and Violet had an amazing life.Their story had many highs, and horrible lows. I don't want to say anymore, but I highly recommend this book. Their life story will stay with me a long time.
Having grown up in the era of sideshow "freaks", I was wary about how Jensen might handle the Hilton twins. I can remember stepping into the tents and staring at the woman with no arms or the man with alligator skin, fascinated and embarrassed. Daisy and Violet traveled that circuit and performed as oddities from the time they were three. They worked their way up to fancier venues and a lot more money, but horrified fascination always brought audiences, and their care givers robbed them blind. In spite of everything, they were talented, intelligent, articulate and engaging. They were also deeply lonely. Jensen handles their story with respect and admiration. The result is a compassionate book. The two women were highly accomplished but could never have a "normal" life. Still, they brought all their considerable warmth and commitment to their performances and earned the accolades they received.Tragedy, betrayal and disappointment dogged them to the end, but they gave life their best, with more determination than most people with far fewer challenges.
This was an incredibly researched book about the lives of Daisy and Violet. It's filled with so many facts that it was a very interesting read. It kind of made me sad when I finished it though, because after all that reading I didn't really feel like I got to know the actual women very well. The book takes you through their lives in show business and then their struggles living outside of the business but I didn't come away with a real take on these women and who they were as individuals. This book left me wanting to know so much more about the Hilton sisters and their personal struggles and feelings.
See again: if you write a book about vaudeville, circuses, and/or burlesque, I will read it. Add magic and I'll probably be a fan for life.Dean Jensen's The Lives and Loves of Daisy and Violet Hilton: A True Story of Conjoined Twins is ostensibly a biography of probably the second most famous conjoined twins in history after Chang and Eng Bunker. Daisy and Violet were abandoned by their birth mother and taken in by a woman who allegedly saw nothing but profit with the girls, and whose management of them subsequently led to a huge career in vaudeville before their star faded and they died, destitute, working in the produce department of a grocery store.Daisy and Violet's story is fascinating, and it's clear Jensen has spent an enormous amount of time researching the twins; many of the photographs in the book are from the author's personal collection. But however fascinating their story is, the book itself reads exactly as you'd expect the book of a rabid fan to read: disjointed and often veering into what appears to be historical fiction. Jensen presents everything as fact, even where it may be conjecture, and often hops back and forth in the timeline. Imagine an acquaintance who's excitedly telling a story and then repeatedly interrupting herself to say "Oh, but did I tell you about this part?" and you'll have a good sense of the narrative structure here.Still, this is a fascinating, if sad, story, and the writing is worlds ahead of Jensen's Queen of the Air, which I found myself unable to get through at all.
